Ride Brief: Crockett 2013 http://www.oaklandyellowjackets.org/news/71-ride-briefs/781-ride-brief-crockett-2013 Hello everyone,

This Saturday’s ride is Crockett Loop. See below for a route change required by closure of the Carquinez Scenic Drive. New route sheets are available on the web site.

It’s forecast to be around 60 degrees for our 8:00 AM start at the Lake, rising to the low 80s by mid-day on the east side of the hills.

All Riders gather at the Lake Merritt Children’s Fairyland Parking Lot

at 8:00 AM. Please be on time to greet new riders, organize into groups, and discuss the route prior to our departure at 8:20 AM.

After reaching Alhambra Avenue, Advanced and Advanced Intermediate riders will turn left to reach our usual rest stop at Martinez Safeway, then U-turn and take Alhambra Valley Road to climb Pig Farm Hill, the Three Bears, and Wildcat Canyon Road.

Humane Riders will turn right, stay on Alhambra Avenue to Pleasant Hill Road and take a rest stop at a different Safeway in Pleasant Hill (and won’t have to backtrack). They then continue south to Norris Canyon in San Ramon, climb and descend to Castro Valley, and then return to the Lake via Bancroft Avenue.

Light Riders follow the Humane Route but end at Pleasant Hill BART

Notes

  • At Gilman Street/Santa Fe Avenue (mile 6.2) it’s better to take Masonic Avenue (immediate left) to Washington (one block past Solano Avenue), then go right one block to rejoin Key Route Blvd. Masonic has traffic lights at Marin Avenue and Solano Avenue.
  • If you're doing the Advanced/AI route, tank up before heading out for the Bears. If you run out, there is water at the Briones Park Entrance (left turn before reaching Happy Valley Road), but you have to ride a ways down the park road to get it.

Ride safely,

Dan

September BIke Skills Clinic http://www.oaklandyellowjackets.org/news/cycling-stuff/782-september-bike-skills-clinic BEGINNING BIKE SKILLS CLINIC-SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22

As many of you might know, Mike Cox has retired as the instructor of this long-running bike skills clinic. After teaching more than 700 riders how to ride more safely and have more fun on the bike, Mike has handed over the clinic to me and my assistant, Hal Danielsen. Our first clinic will be on September 22 at the same Miller-Knox Park location in Point Richmond.

I am confident that I can continue to help clinic participants learn in a fun and safe environment. After racing for the Left Coast Cyclery team for 7 years, earning a California Triple Crown, acting as a mentor for both the Early Bird Criterium Training Series and the ‘Winner Within’ women’s racing series and becoming a USCF Coach, I feel well qualified to teach the skills covered in our clinic.

We will cover many skills during the 5 hour clinic, including basic handling, pedaling, braking, cornering and descending techniques, beginning paceline practice as well as offering helpful hints to further improve your skills. And while no one will be asked to attempt anything they are not comfortable doing, we will most certainly provide you with the necessary tools/instruction to perform the given tasks safely. Whether you are beginning rider, training for your first organized ride, or even considering racing, this clinic will provide a fun and supportive environment to help you expand your skill set.

Ride Brief: San Ramon/Norris Canyon/Pedalfest 2013 http://www.oaklandyellowjackets.org/news/71-ride-briefs/779-ride-brief-san-ramonnorris-canyonpedalfest-2013 This Saturday's ride is San Ramon/Norris Canyon. It's also Oakland's Pedalfest celebration, which benefits the East Bay Bike Coalition. If you haven't gone before, well, it's fun and there's something for every bicycle aficionado.

See the new route sheet. Expect perfect weather for riding and for hanging out afterward. It will be about 59 degrees at the Lake in the morning. After warming up on the climb up Spruce, enjoy sun and temperatures in the 70s to near 80 degrees on the cruise through Danville and San Ramon, and in the low 70s at Jack London Square in the afternoon.

Yellowjackets will gather at the Lake Merritt Fairyland Parking Lot at 8:00 AM and will roll at 8:20 AM. Light riders will do a decide-and-ride, while others head out Telegraph Avenue. The group usually rides at an easy pace and stays together until we get to the climb on Spruce.

The new route sheet includes the following changes. Each involves a lot of turns, so go ahead and give me grief about it J:

  • In downtown Lafayette, avoid some of Mt. Diablo Boulevard, with its traffic and stoplights. Instead, take a shortcut via the Lafayette-Moraga trail to get to Olympic Boulevard.
  • Instead of turning right from Olympic on to Tice Boulevard, continue down Olympic and roll through quiet Walnut Creek neighborhoods to get to Danville Boulevard.
  • Rest stop at Danville Peets.
  • Over in San Leandro, turn off Estudillo and take a cool shortcut to get a view of San Leandro Creek on your way to Bancroft Avenue.
  • Rest stop at Zocalo Coffeehouse on Bancroft (just before Dutton).
  • Instead of continuing up Bancroft, go west through San Leandro to get to Doolittle Drive. Then go north on Doolittle and connect to our usual route through Alameda to get to Oakland's Embarcadero and Jack London Square.

The route has plenty of bail-out options to BART; at Lafayette (18 mi.), Walnut Creek (24 mi.), Castro Valley (43 mi.), and San Leandro (49 mi.).

Next week's ride (July 27) is Mt. Diablo, followed by the Marin Picnic Ride (at Stafford Lake in Novato) on August 3.

Ride safely,

Dan

Ride Brief: Mines Road 2013 http://www.oaklandyellowjackets.org/news/newbie-corner/757-ride-brief-mines-road-2013 Hello everyone,

Tomorrow’s ride is Mines Road. The forecast for Livermore is for mostly sun and 58 degrees at 8 AM, rising to the upper 80s by early afternoon. Winds will be calm in the morning and pick up in the afternoon at 10-15 mph.

NOTE: The Advanced/Advanced Intermediate start for this ride has been changed from previous years. (It is no longer at Las Positas College).

Light Riders, Advanced Intermediate Riders, and Advanced Riders gather at Dublin/Pleasanton BART at 8:00 AM. Roll time is 8:20. The route is a mostly flat 12 miles out to a regroup at Murietta’s Well just ¼ mile up Mines Road. From here, Light Riders may return to BART or venture a ways up Mines Road before returning. Advanced Intermediate and Advanced Riders will continue to the Junction Café and return.

Humane Riders will gather at the Robertson Park (formerly Ernie Rodrigues) Sports Fields on South Livermore Avenue in Livermore (same location as in previous years) at 8:00 AM and roll at 8:20.

Download the Mines Road Route sheets.

If you are a less-experienced rider or have not done this ride before: Temperatures will be warm. It is a very long climb to the Junction Café. There is no water on Mines Road along the way, and no shade. Hydrate fully before starting. Bring at least two full water bottles and electrolytes. Take it easy, and turn around if you need to.

Those wishing to ride locally may gather at the Lake Merritt Children’s Fairyland Parking Lot at 8:00AM for an 8:20 departure. The selected local ride is Dublin Grade. Please note there are no ride leaders for local rides when the Club ride is BART or AWAY.

Ride safely,

Dan

Ride Brief: Arlington 2013 http://www.oaklandyellowjackets.org/news/71-ride-briefs/756-2013-05-11-13-49-23 Hello everyone,

Tomorrow’s ride is Arlington Loop. The forecast is for a much cooler weather than today: 62 degrees and sunny for the 8:00 AM start at the Lake. It may in the upper 70s in Moraga by late morning.

All Riders gather at the Lake Merritt Children’s Fairyland parking lot at 8:00 AM. Please be on time to greet new riders, organize into groups, and discuss the route prior to our departure at 8:20 AM.

All Riders proceed north via 27th Street, Telegraph Av., 29th Street, Martin Luther King Way, 45th Street, Market, and Sacramento Street through Berkeley. At Hopkins Street, Light Riders turn left to continue to El Sobrante via Key Route and the I-80 bikeway.

All others turn right toward Marin Circle via Monterey Avenue, then the climb and descent on Arlington Avenue.

All riders regroup at the Jack-in-the-Box on San Pablo Dam Road at Appian Way and proceed along San Pablo Dam Road. Light Riders end at Orinda BART while all others continue to Moraga for a stop at the gas station before climbing Pinehurst and returning to the Lake.

Download the Arlington Route sheets.

Notes:

  1. This route includes descents on residential streets, notably Arlington Avenue in East Richmond Heights and Trestle Glen Road in Oakland. Please be cautious on these descents as there are many intersections and driveways, and people driving motor vehicles tend to behave unpredictably.
  2. The Humane/Intermediate Advanced/Advanced route goes right at Yuba Avenue. Yuba Avenue comes one block after crossing the pedestrian bridge after the Arlington descent. On Yuba, you climb a steep hill, turn right on Alpine Road, continue climbing, then go left on Hillcrest Road and climb a little more, then descend and meet San Pablo Dam Road near the Pedaler Bike Shop. From there, it’s just a couple of blocks to the Jack-in-the-Box. If you are used to missing this turn and just continuing on to Amador (next to I-80 ), well, you have been missing a good climb and a more scenic route.
  3. Next week’s ride (May 11th) is Mines Road (BART/AWAY). Details of the entire season can be found in 2013 ride calendar.

    Ride safely,

    Dan

    Tomorrow’s ride is Point Pinole.

Riding weather will be about perfect—near 60 degrees and sunny for the 8:00 AM start at the Lake, rising to around 70 degrees by early afternoon.

Start time is 8:00 AM. Please be on time to greet new riders, socialize, and form into groups before we roll at 8:20 AM.

All Riders start from the Lake Merritt Fairyland parking lot and ride to the Jack-in-the-Box at San Pablo Dam Road and Appian Way in El Sobrante. Light riders then return to the Lake on the same route. All others continue to Point Pinole Regional Park for a rest stop at the end of the pier and then continue through North Richmond, Point Richmond, and via the Bay Trail to return to the Lake.

Download the Point Pinole Route sheets.

    Notes:

    1. The Light route sheet shows the old rest stop and turn around at the ECG Gas Station. The stop is now at the Jack-in-the-Box on the other (south) side of San Pablo Dam Road.
    2. Longtime Humane/Intermediate/Advanced (HIA) riders should note that, after leaving Point Pinole Regional Park, the route does not return to Richmond Parkway. Follow the safer and more scenic route by continuing straight along Giant Road to Parr Boulevard.
    3. The HIA route sheet shows a left from Parr Boulevard on to 3rd Street at Mile 26.3. 3rd Street has been renamed Fred Jackson Way.
    4. The HIA route sheet shows a right on to Gertrude Avenue at Mile 27.4. Instead continue straight on Fred Jackson Way a few blocks further to Castro Street. Turn right on Castro Street and continue to the end of the cul-de-sac, then follow the painted bike path under the overpass. At the next intersection (Hensley) cross Castro Street—this may require hitting the pedestrian crossing button—then rejoin the route sheet by continuing along Castro Street into Point Richmond.
    5. Next week’s ride (April 27) is Lake Chabot. Details of the entire season can be found in 2013 ride calendar.

In the morning, you may want to look out the window and check the forecast before deciding whether to ride.

All Riders gather at the Lake Merritt Children's Fairyland Parking Lot at 9:00 AM for a 9:20 AM departure. We all head out Bellevue Avenue to Grand Avenue.

      Route Sheet Break Down

Light Riders and Humane Riders will take a right on El Embarcadero and another right on Lakeshore.

The Light Riders turn left on East 18th Street and then go left again to ascend Park Boulevard toward the Mormon Temple as they begin the "Zoo Ride – Light" route.

Humane Riders turn left on East 15th Street then right on 5th Avenue to follow our route through Alameda and down Doolittle Drive toward Castro Valley.

Advanced and Advanced Intermediate Riders continue up Grand Avenue and go right on Wildwood to ascend to the Mormon Temple, then take the Butters Canyon route to reach Skyline Boulevard, then descend Redwood Road and continue to Castro Valley.

The Humane and Advanced/Advanced Intermediate routes join in Castro Valley. From there, riders go over Dublin Grade, then south on Foothill Boulevard through Pleasanton. After a stop in Sunol, the route travels Calaveras Road all the way to Milpitas, then turns north to reach Fremont BART.

Route sheets are in the usual places.

There is no route scheduled for Saturday a week from now (April 6). We'll either announce one or there will be a decide-and-ride beginning at 9 am at the Lake.

It is recommended to instead continue northbound on Grizzly Peak Boulevard to Golf Course Road. Right on Golf Course Road, then right again on Shasta Road to reach Wildcat Canyon Road.

After descending Wildcat Canyon Road to San Pablo Dam Road, we go south to the Town of Moraga and return to the Lake via Pinehurst, Shepherd Canyon, Park Boulevard, and Trestle Glen.

A route sheet can be downloaded here.

Tomorrow's ride is Mt. Tam. Expect morning clouds to give way to sun. Temperatures will be in the mid-50s on the Embarcadero at 8 am (a little warmer in Mill Valley) and rising to around 70 by early afternoon. Winds will be still to mild.

Advanced and Advanced Intermediate Riders gather in front of Red's Java House, Embarcadero and Bryant in San Francisco at 8:00 AM for an 8:20 AM departure. Riders proceed north on Embarcadero toward Fort Mason and, after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, proceed through Sausalito and along the bike path past Mill Valley.

After climbing and descending Camino Alto, riders continue straight on Magnolia Avenue and pass through Ross and San Anselmo on their way to Fairfax. After a stop at the Coffee Roastery (Broadway and Bolinas in Fairfax), the route climbs Bolinas Fairfax Road past Alpine Lake. After completing the climb to Ridgecrest Boulevard, riders roll up and down while enjoying the views from the "Seven Sisters", then descend via Pan Toll Road and Shoreline Highway back to Sausalito before returning to Embarcadero BART.

Humane Riders gather at Mill Valley Safeway, 1 Camino Alto Avenue at 8:00 AM for an 8:20 AM start. The route heads into Mill Valley via Miller Avenue, winds through Mill Valley residential neighborhoods, and then climbs Panoramic Highway to the top of Pan Toll Road. Riders then follow the Advanced/AI route in reverse descending to Alpine Lake and into Fairfax, and then continue on a mostly flat route back to the start.

Download the route sheet and bring it with you on the ride.

      Notes

      • Red's Java House doesn't open until 9 AM, so there is no coffee and no bathroom at the start point. The Ferry Building (with Peets, etc.) is a few blocks north on Embarcadero.
      • BART leaves the 19th Street Station at 7:39 AM and arrives at Embarcadero at 7:52. The next train doesn't arrive until 8:12. If you think you might miss the 8:20 start, you can try to intercept us as we roll north on Embarcadero.
      • Be especially careful passing the Ferry Building as the Farmer’s Market results in unpredictable vehicle movements near the curb.
      • The stop at Marina and Lyon (mile 4.6) is useful if you didn't get to use the restroom before starting, but check with your companions as they may plan on not stopping so early in the ride.

Tomorrow's ride is Fairfax Biketoberfest. We'll be riding the scenic Fairfax/Olema route, but starting near the Biketoberfest grounds. That way, we'll be able to relax and enjoy the food, beer, and entertainment after the ride with only a mile or so to get back to the ride start.

Then the familiar route via Lucas Valley Road and Nicasio Valley to Point Reyes Station for a stop at the Bovine Bakery. Then to Olema and through Samuel P. Note: The route sheet includes two new segments, both of which avoid portions of busy Sir Frances Drake Boulevard on the way into Fairfax.

Those wishing to ride locally may gather at the Lake Merritt Children's Fairyland Parking Lot at 8:00 AM for an 8:20 departure on the Tunnel/Grizzly route. Light Riders will also gather at the Lake at 8:00 AM for an 8:20 departure on a route to be decided.
