Humane Intermediates start from Lafayette BART and climb up the big mountain partially—to the ranger station at the North Gate / South Gate junction (aka "the saddle"). All others ride from Lake Merritt and learn just what quadriceps and gluteus muscles are good for: a warm-up climb through the Montclair district of Oakland, then a journey to the summit of Mount Diablo at 3,850 feet and finish at Pleasant Hill BART.

Light riders shuttle by BART to Orinda and enjoy a ramble around Contra Costa County's residential bike trail system, finishing the ride at Dublin-Pleasanton BART.




January 4 - LAKE
Happy Valley

Explore some new and old routes through Montclair and over the hills to Lafayette. Then climb Upper Happy Valley Road and Happy Valley Road and over two of the 3 Bears. Continue on beautiful rural roads to Pinole, then return via the OYJ Point Pinole route through North Richmond, Point Richmond, and the San Francisco Bay Trail. Extend your ride down south on the Bay Trail to Emeryville and return through West Oakland to the Lake. Light riders follow the same route to Lafayette, then link to the Lafayette-Moraga bike trail to Moraga and end at Orinda BART.




January 11 - LAKE
Lake Chabot

A counter-clockwise loop around Oakland and San Leandro. The outbound route is a flat cruise along Doolittle Rd by Oakland Airport and a modest climb up Fairmont Rd in San Leandro. Lights and Intermediates descend the south side of Lake Chabot and return via Bancroft Ave. or Foothill Blvd. Advanced riders complete the loop via Redwood Rd and Joaquin Miller Ave.




January 18 - LAKE
Tunnel & Grizzly

Climb up Broadway along Lake Temescal, Old Tunnel Road and part of Grizzly Peak Blvd, then reap the rewards of your effort with an exhilarating descent on South Park and Wildcat Canyon Rd. Cruise along San Pablo Dam Rd into El Sobrante and return to Lake Merritt via Key Route. Light group riders may have an alternate route as determined by ride coordinators.




January 25 - LAKE
Dublin Grade

Light riders end in Pleasanton and return via BART. Option riders continue north through San Ramon, Lafayette and Moraga, then ride back over the ridge via Pinehurst.




February 1 - LAKE
Arlington Loop

A ride to the south side of Oakland at Knowland park with varied routes by group for the return. Light riders go via Mountain Blvd. and return to the lake via Bancroft. Intermediate and Advanced groups take "BBR" up to Skyline outbound, and return via a loop around Lake Chabot and on Redwood Road. Advanced and Advanced Intermediate riders add on the climb up Pinehurst at the tail end of the ride.




February 15 - LAKE
Three Bears & Some Redwoods

Climb up Broadway, Old Tunnel Road and part of Grizzly Peak Blvd, then descend from Tilden Park on Shasta Rd and Wildcat Canyon. The Humane Group now completes a loop via the Key Route course in reverse, and the Light group finishes up at the Orinda BART station, while others complete an hourglass loop around the Briones reservoir with the Three Bears, San Pablo Dam Rd and a return via Moraga, Pinehurst and Redwood Rd.




Febraury 22 - LAKE
Five Canyons

This ride follows our familiar route out to Dublin Grade, but before the grade, riders turn onto Five Canyons and will head down a short descent which quickly turns up and begins with a somewhat steep climb. Five Canyons intersects Fairview and riders will continue to climb to the top and then turn onto Hayward Blvd and descend past Hayward State and eventually join Redwood Road route back to Lake Merritt. Because of the steep climbs, this route may be mostly suitable to Advanced and Advanced Intermediate Groups. Humane Intermediate and Light groups may opt to do a variation of the classic Dublin Grade route instead.




March 1 - LAKE
Wildwood/Moraga

Warm up on the hills of Piedmont (Wildwood and Moraga) and Oakmore (Leimert), then climb the wooded "BBR" (Burdeck-Butters-Robinson). Think you're done climbing? Think again. Head up Skyline Blvd, past the Chabot Space Center and keep racking up elevation till you reach Grizzly Peak. Finally, treat yourself to a plunge down South Park Drive in Tilden Park, then return via Moraga (the town) and Pinehurst and Redwood Roads.




March 8 - AWAY
Lucas Valley

LIGHT RIDERS START: Nicasio General Store

Light riders start in Nicasio, and enjoy a scenic trip to the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station and back. All others start off with a trip through Lucas Valley along Miller Creek before joining the same route to Point Reyes Station. Intermediate and Advanced riders take a turn for Marshall, up the 'wall' from the coast, then visit the Nicasio Cheese Factory before returning to the start via Lucas Valley.

RIDE-AND-DECIDE OPTION: Those who prefer to ride locally may meet at Children's Fairyland and depart on a decided route at 9:00 AM.

Climb Spruce and ramble through Wildcat Canyon in the Berkeley Hills, paying a visit to Inspiration Point. The ride then cuts through Lafayette and Rossmoor on the way to San Ramon. A long, paceline-friendly stretch on Danville Blvd is a nice prelude to the only other significant climb of the day, the scenic Norris Canyon. After riding through Castro Valley, the ride heads back to Oakland via Bancroft Ave.




March 29 - LAKE
Calaveras

The ride ends at Fremont BART. Shorter, less difficult ride options for Humane Intermediate and Light riders to be determined by ride coordinators.

2013 Season Kick-Off Ride

Celebrate the start of the Oakland Yellowjackets riding season with a leisurely ride from Lake Merritt to Bay Farm Island on Alameda and back. Bike tech inspections, rest stop facilities, SAG wagon and potluck picnic following the ride sponsored by Yellowjackets members. Registration opens at 8:00 AM and the ride begins at 9:00 AM.




April 19 - LAKE
Point Pinole

Light riders may retrace the route to Lake Merritt, while others continue to Point Pinole pier. The return from the pier travels along the Point Richmond Marina and the Bay Trail to the Berkeley bike-ped bridge.




April 26 - LAKE
Lake Chabot

A counter-clockwise loop around Oakland and San Leandro starts outbound with a flatish cruise to Bay Farm and south along Doolittle Rd by the Oakland Airport to the first rest stop at the Union gas station on E 14th. Light riders return to the lake via East 14th and Bancroft Ave. For every one, it's a modest climb up Fairmont Rd in San Leandro. Humanes descend the south side of Lake Chabot and return via Mountain Blvd. Advanced and Intermediate riders complete the loop via Redwood Rd and Joaquin Miller Ave.

Humanes make the climb up Mines to the Junction Cafe, but start at Ernir

A ride circling the foothills of Mount Diablo. Ride through Clayton and the ranch country surrounding Marsh Creek Springs, then tackle a challenging but shaded and picturesque climb. Hard work pays off with "the Plunge" on the eastern side of the Black Hills towards Livermore. The ride continues on a counter-clockwise path through Danville and ends at the Walnut Creek BART station. A shorter, less strenuous ride options for Light group begins at Concord BART, rambles through the bike trails of Contra Costa County and ends at Orinda BART.

A Bay Area favorite. This ride takes you across the Golden Gate Bridge and through Sausalito. Light riders go directly to Tiburon at the end of the Sausalito bike path and return to San Francisco via ferry. Other groups will enjoy a scenic counter-clockwise route around Tiburon and Corte Madera with nicer roads and less traffic than the old route.

Sonoma Picnic Ride

A Yellowjackets mid-season tradition. The ride begins and ends at the picnic grounds of the Shiloh Ranch Regional Park, in Windsor (a shorter drive from Oakland than Lake Sonoma). The ride is a picturesque ramble around the Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys in Sonoma County, on rolling roads alongside countless vineyards. Intermediate and Advanced riders ride to Windsor on the West side of the valleys, then return on East side of the valley through Healdsburg. Light riders enjoy a shorter loop which turns around at Healdsburg, halfway out on the longer route.

A potluck picnic sponsored by Yellowjackets members awaits you at the ride finish.

Crockett Loop

Light riders finish up at Pleasant Hill BART, while others pay the 3 Bears a visit before returning via Wildcat Canyon. Humane Intermediate riders enjoy more (but flatter) miles by traveling south to Castro Valley via San Ramon, then return via Bancroft and Foothill. There will be an option to extend the ride by crossing the new Zampa (Carquinez) Bridge bikeway.




July 26 - LAKE
San Ramon

Take a tour of the East Bay and end at Oakland’s Pedalfest celebration at Jack London Square. All groups (except Light, see below) travel to Sunol via Dublin Grade and Foothill Blvd in Pleasanton. Humane Intermediate riders use a lowland route via Mountain Blvd and Stanley; Intermediate and Advanced riders ride through Castro Valley via Redwood Rd. Both groups then travel along Niles Canyon and over Palomares in the northbound direction. Humane riders finish at Castro Valley BART, while others ride back to the lake via Mountain Blvd.

Explore the beauty of the wine country and the southern side of Sonoma County. Advanced riders traverse Coleman Valley to the coast, then visit Jenner, Cazadero, Occidental and Bloomfield. Intermediates do a clockwise loop, traveling northwest to Valley Ford, then up to the Guernville in the Russian River valley, then return via Sebastopol. Light riders enjoy a scenic ramble to Tomales, then a return via Chileno Valley.

August 30 - LAKE
Wildwood/Moraga

Warm up on the hills of Piedmont (Wildwood and Moraga) and Oakmore (Leimert), then climb the wooded "BBR" (Burdeck-Butters-Robinson). Think you're done climbing? Think again. Head up Skyline Blvd, past the Chabot Space Center and keep racking up elevation till you reach Grizzly Peak. Finally, treat yourself to a plunge down South Park Drive in Tilden Park, then return via Moraga (the town) and Pinehurst and Redwood Roads.




September 1 - LAKE
Labor Day Decide-and-Ride


START: Children's Fairyland, Oakland
Departs: 9:00 AM

Meet at the Children's Fairyland parking lot and depart on a decided route at 9:00 AM.




September 6 - AWAY
Peninsula

All groups head south on Cañada Rd to Woodside. Light riders then loop around Portola Valley and Palo Alto before returning. Humane Intermediate riders travel further and circle around Los Altos Hills and Portola Valley. Advanced Intermediate riders proceed to climb Old La Honda Rd, on to the coastal town of San Gregorio, and return over the ridge via Tunitas Creek Rd and Kings Mountain Rd. Advanced riders tackle Page Mill Rd and Pescadero Creek Rd to the coast, then rejoin the Advanced Intermediate route.

The complete route travels to Castro Valley via BBR (Burdeck-Butters-Robinson) and Redwood Rd, then traverses the Dublin Grade and Foothill Rd to Sunol before the "main event" - southbound on Calaveras Rd. The ride ends at Fremont BART. Shorter, less difficult ride options for Humane Intermediate and Light riders to be determined by ride coordinators.

Celebrate the end of the OYJ regular season with this ride that starts in the usual place, goes over the same roads, and ends back at the lake. Three rides of different lengths: Approx 40 miles for the Light riders, 60 Humane, 80 Advanced. There are diffent starting times for each of the fourt groups Light, Humane, Intermediate and Advanced. Catered lunch at the Oakland Lawn Bowling Club following the ride.

Take a scenic tour around San Francisco and get a taste of the SF Grand Prix pro race course (an optional climb up Fillmore Street) if you dare! Light riders travel to the beach along the Great Highway and have the option to end at BART. Others enjoy stretches of the San Francisco scenic drive, including Twin Peaks.

October 11 - AWAY
Fairfax

This ride has it all! Ascents, fantastic descents, redwoods, reservoirs, a great bakery, a bike trail through a beautiful state park, (did I mention a great bakery?) and a ride through another state park with wonderful views of San Pablo Bay. The Lite riders get to experience most of this as well with a mellow ride of just 25 miles. What's not to like?

Light riders start at the Pleasant Hill BART and head up Cummings Skyway before descending into Crocket and crossing over the Zampa Bridge. After a winding through Vallejo and Benicia, the route returns to the Pleasant Hill BART station via the Benicia Bridge. All other riders start and finish at Lake Merritt with extra miles and climbing including an ascent of Pinehurst at the end.




October 25 - AWAY
Cosumnes

Experience the California Delta. This is a scenic, flat ride through farm fields and historic towns, with four ferry rides, many drawbridge crossings, and a stop at the Cosumnes River Preserve, a great birding spot where migrating Sandhill Cranes stop during November.The possibility of seeing Sandhill Cranes is high, so all you ornithologists, bring your binoculars!
