A New Year's Day Tradition (well, a new one anyway): Humane Intermediates start from Lafayette BART and climb up the big mountain partially—to the ranger station at the North Gate / South Gate junction (aka "the saddle"). All others ride from Lake Merritt and learn just what quadriceps and gluteus muscles are good for: a warm-up climb through the Montclair district of Oakland, then a journey to the summit of Mount Diablo at 3,850 feet and finish at Pleasant Hill BART.

Light riders shuttle by BART to Orinda and enjoy a ramble around Contra Costa County's residential bike trail system, finishing the ride at Dublin-Pleasanton BART.

Ride through residential neighborhoods of North Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, Albany and Richmond, then regroup in El Sobrante. Light riders may retrace the route to Lake Merritt, while others continue to Point Pinole pier. The return from the pier travels along the Point Richmond Marina and the Bay Trail to the Berkeley bike-ped bridge.

A counter-clockwise loop around Oakland and San Leandro. The outbound route is a flat cruise along Doolittle Rd by Oakland Airport and a modest climb up Fairmont Rd in San Leandro. Lights and Intermediates descend the south side of Lake Chabot and return via Bancroft Ave. or Foothill Blvd. Advanced riders complete the loop via Redwood Rd and Joaquin Miller Ave.
January 21 - LAKE
Tunnel & Grizzly

Climb up Broadway along Lake Temescal, Old Tunnel Road and part of Grizzly Peak Blvd, then reap the rewards of your effort with an exhilarating descent on South Park and Wildcat Canyon Rd. Cruise along San Pablo Dam Rd into El Sobrante and return to Lake Merritt via Key Route. Light group riders may have an alternate route as determined by ride coordinators.

This ride warms up on Doolittle Rd by the Oakland Airport into San Leandro, crosses over Castro Valley via Fairmont and Lake Chabot, then traverses the Dublin Grade (Dublin Canyon Rd). Light riders end in Pleasanton and return via BART. Option riders continue north through San Ramon, Lafayette and Moraga, then ride back over the ridge via Pinehurst.
February 4 - LAKE
Arlington Loop

A ride to the south side of Oakland at Knowland park with varied routes by group for the return. Light riders go via Mountain Blvd. and return to the lake via Bancroft. Intermediate and Advanced groups take "BBR" up to Skyline outbound, and return via a loop around Lake Chabot and on Redwood Road. Advanced and Advanced Intermediate riders add on the climb up Pinehurst at the tail end of the ride.
February 18 - LAKE
Three Bears & Some Redwoods

Climb up Broadway, Old Tunnel Road and part of Grizzly Peak Blvd, then descend from Tilden Park on Shasta Rd and Wildcat Canyon. The Humane Group now completes a loop via the Key Route course in reverse, and the Light group finishes up at the Orinda BART station, while others complete an hourglass loop around the Briones reservoir with the Three Bears, San Pablo Dam Rd and a return via Moraga, Pinehurst and Redwood Rd.

Febraury 25 - LAKE
Five Canyons

This ride follows our familiar route out to Dublin Grade, but before the grade, riders turn onto Five Canyons and will head down a short descent which quickly turns up and begins with a somewhat steep climb. Five Canyons intersects Fairview and riders will continue to climb to the top and then turn onto Hayward Blvd and descend past Hayward State and eventually join Redwood Road route back to Lake Merritt. Because of the steep climbs, this route may be mostly suitable to Advanced and Advanced Intermediate Groups. Humane Intermediate and Light groups may opt to do a variation of the classic Dublin Grade route instead.
March 3 - LAKE
Wildwood/Moraga

Warm up on the hills of Piedmont (Wildwood and Moraga) and Oakmore (Leimert), then climb the wooded "BBR" (Burdeck-Butters-Robinson). Think you're done climbing? Think again. Head up Skyline Blvd, past the Chabot Space Center and keep racking up elevation till you reach Grizzly Peak. Finally, treat yourself to a plunge down South Park Drive in Tilden Park, then return via Moraga (the town) and Pinehurst and Redwood Roads.

LIGHT RIDERS START: Nicasio General Store
Light riders start in Nicasio, and enjoy a scenic trip to the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station and back. All others start off with a trip through Lucas Valley along Miller Creek before joining the same route to Point Reyes Station. Intermediate and Advanced riders take a turn for Marshall, up the 'wall' from the coast, then visit the Nicasio Cheese Factory before returning to the start via Lucas Valley.
RIDE-AND-DECIDE OPTION: Those who prefer to ride locally may meet at Children's Fairyland and depart on a decided route at 8:00 AM.

Climb Spruce and ramble through Wildcat Canyon in the Berkeley Hills, paying a visit to Inspiration Point. The ride then cuts through Lafayette and Rossmoor on the way to San Ramon. A long, paceline-friendly stretch on Danville Blvd is a nice prelude to the only other significant climb of the day, the scenic Norris Canyon. After riding through Castro Valley, the ride heads back to Oakland via Bancroft Ave.
March 31 - LAKE
Calaveras

The ride ends at Fremont BART. Shorter, less difficult ride options for Humane Intermediate and Light riders to be determined by ride coordinators.
